You can make similar stuff at home by simply mixing sugar/salt and water on a small tray and leaving it out in the sun.

If you want the hardcore version and don't mind sacrificing a pot you can also heat up a salt/water mixture (like when you cook pasta) until the water evaporates and it starts building a crystalline structure. It will smell like hell but looks really cool when the crystals start building.
