That bayonet was awfully close to that soldiers face as it was getting spun around. I wonder if anyone has accidentally ever gotten cut open by that drill.

Shia, mm,
What they are doing is a variation of inspection arms. they are using a loaded Springfield 1903 rifle which weighs in at around 18-19 pounds. The reason it is so thorough is that the guard on the right is about to relive a guard who has been pacing on duty at the tomb of the unknown soldier for the past hour. There is a guard present at the tomb 24 hours a day 365 days a year no matter the weather. Its a sign of respect toward fallen soldier who never had the chance to be recovered from the battle field and never had their remains brought back home to their country and loved ones. You can call it stupid all you want your just expressing the freedom that those men have sworn to protect. And that the soldier in the tomb died for. Hopefully now you know why the do what they do.

Thank you M for your response. I want to believe that it will make a difference to mm & Shia but I am not hopeful. I would add that the remains of an unidentified service member are actually interred in the tomb.
