Scared ducks don't sink. A DNA fault may cause some birds to be hatched with non waterproof feather coat. They will drown or freeze to death short time after leaving the nest.
A little duck probably decided to explore the pond on its own, and swam away from its mother. Maybe it got scared or maybe it started to sink, but a grown duck heard the “kwa kwa†and hurried to teach the little one how to swim.
