It's wierd to think that even if they knew how to build a nuclear power plant, they didn't know about radiation's danger at all. I once read somewhere, that mothers who carried their children when they evacuated, saved many of them from cancer, because they didn't have to walk in radioactive dust that was falling down. It's really hard to imagine how enormous amount of radioactivity there was released...
