Would you eat a bug?

How about if it was in silky creamy ice cream? Well the folks in Columbia Mo. Employees of Sparky’s Homemade Ice Cream began collecting cicadas removing the dead bugs wings they boiled them and then  covered them in brown sugar and milk to create a cicada ice cream.

When a public health worker found the cicada ice cream he asked the company to stop serving the ice cream even though there isn’t a public health ordinance against it.

Learn Something Fun:  It takes 12 lbs. of milk to make just one gallon of ice cream.

A traditional italian artisan yellow base mix contains 1030g milk (3.5% fat), 300g sugar and 12 egg yolks (approx 200g). Total weight 1530g. When mixed, whipped and frozen the air added (called overrun) increases the volume by a factor of 1.5. So, 1.53Litres makes 2.3 litres of ice cream. Divide original ingredients weight by 1.5 to find amounts required to make 1 litre. ie 687 g milk, 200g sugar and 8 eggs (approx 120g). Use conversion factor of litres to US gallons (3.785) to find amounts you need.

The 1.53 Litres makes 2.3 litres of ice cream is the important part of the above quote. No fact checking here...
