Yes they were considering how many didn't make it back. The biggest draw back to these planes were their size that had a considerable impact on maneuverability. They would generally head out with a support squadron of fighter planes that would take on enemy fighter planes that could out maneuver the bombers like a hummingbird flying around a hawk. There was also the threat of flack cannons which some of the pictures above show the damage inflicted. If it were not for how well the planes were built the ones above would not have made it back alive and these are just a few pictures of the many that did make it back. A good movie to watch that highlights the crews and the plane itself is The Memphis Belle that is worth watching.

Number 26 is my great grandpa's plane. He was the tail gunner and you could just imagine how crazy that must have been for him. He's still alive (he's 92 now) and kicking it in Boulder, CO. He's got the best stories and apparently the best luck of anyone I've ever met. If that tail end had come off like it very well could have, I know of at least 20 people that wouldn't be here. Lucky. That's all I can say. :)
