Actually, dolphins can survive out of the water for quite a while. There are a few conditions, however. Their skin needs to be kept damp, and you have to keep them from overheating by pouring cold water on their flippers. There's a lot of arteries right under the skin on their flippers. If you do that, they can survive out of the water for quite long, since they have lungs to breathe, like humans.
