Have the rules changed? I was always told the ball had to go OVER the net to be considered a legitimate shot. On some of those where they had to reach deep to the side, the ball went next to the net, not over it.

there is no rule that says the ball has to go OVER the net on its path to the other side of the table.

as long as it gets there directly from the other player's paddle, it's a legal shot. i.e., the net is merely an obstacle, nothing more.
