A soil loses its density and stiffness and starts to act like a liquid. It can no longer support weight, so all the objects sink in it. Dangerous quicksand traps may appear as well as the “sand volcanoes” – the cones on the ground surface with a crater on the top that are formed by the liquefied sand forcing its way from below the ground.
