Well, it’s not! It’s in fact as poisonous as it looks good. This Blue Lagoon located in Buxton, England, is almost as toxic as bleach but despite the warnings, people still swim in it.
High alkalinity is not toxic. The problem is from all the trash since the alkalinity [just like acidity] can break down the molecules of the metals within the water and suspend them, allowing them to be absorbed into the skin.
i think that dead animals, excrement and rubbish would not be much of a problem since the high alkalinity would tend to sterilise them pretty quickly. regardless, there is no way i would swim there. swimming pool water has a ph of about 7.2 - 7.8, by comparison.
