That's OK with me, it started right after 9/11. so to the Reps don't try to change the truth, when the useless Bush and his gang of thieves were in the White House they didn't say anything and now they "are surprised". Give me a break!

as soon as you connected to the modern internet your actions were being recorded by private companies, i.e. your ISP. second, is anyone online who's good enough to hack your packets. so i'm not really sure yet if the NSA having quick access makes that situation better or worse. on the whole this kind of thing was probably inevitable, i imagine.

for all the people panicking, i wonder how they thought the internet worked, anyway. never heard of the fallout from napster, etc...?

It's all about control. From neolithic times till this very moment, leaders of mankind have two important jobs they think about all the time. Secure the borders of their realm and keep control of the people inside it. The internet was a shock for them, even for those in democratic countries. All the attacks on internet lately (SOPA for example) is part of a major effort to get control over the internet. The plan seem to be to introduce to the digital realm, the laws and regulations that sometimes makes RIL a bitch. Bureaucrats seem to have been frustrated by peoples freedom on the internet. I'm afraid that they are slowly winning the war. I was just waiting for something like PRISM to be exposed. We are mostly living our lives online, and governments have discovered that we are easy to be followed there. There is nothing new under the sun, the quest to secure the borders and control the peoples within continues...

mainly agree, except for the idea of this starting in neolithic times. no, the tribal model is quite different IMO. this kind of thing starts somewhere along the lines of early civilisation, especially feudal / warlord environments.

too many ppl in any one group = too much difference of opinion = the need for more and more control and leadership. otherwise the group always splinters. modern man has never found a good substitute for close blood ties and very closely-unified culture / religion IME.
