Plus, they have rudimentary gills in their anus that allow them to extract small amounts of oxygen from the water - just enough to survive while hibernating. However, if the water they are in freezes solid and the turtle does too, they die.

interesting if true; repped. this may explain why they try to dig down and make their hibernation space in the mud... below the freezing pt.
