#15 He actually fled to the kingdom of (Kievan) Rus, modern day Ukraine. Both Ukrainians and Russians see this kingdom as the origin of their nations. He fled there at the age of 15 after being wounded at the battle of Stiklestad in central Norway in 1030, where his half brother king Olav II (aka Saint Olav) was killed. Harald did invade England in 1066 and quickly conquered the city of York, but was killed a few days later in the battle of Stamford bridge against Harold Godwinson. Godwinson was himself killed a month later in the battle of Hastings against William the conqueror. The death of Harald Hardrada marks the end of the viking era of Scandinavian history.
