La La Land

From Damien Chazelle, the director of the superb movie Whiplash, comes this beautiful and touching musical about an unusual love story — the kind of love that can lift a person up even when they think life can’t get any worse. Visually stunning, and with talented actors and superb musical numbers, this one’s definitely worth going to the cinema for.

A Cure for Wellness

Directed by the man who made Pirates of the Caribbean, Gore Verbinski, this is an intriguing thriller about a young man who goes to a "wellness center" to retrieve his boss. But the spas and salons turn out to be far from an ideal location for relaxation. The trailers suggest this one will be intriguing indeed.

Alien: Covenant

There’s a lot to enjoy here: the expanses of an alien world that was meant to become like the Garden of Eden yet turned into something far more sinister; the fascinating architecture of the spaceship; performances from the likes of Michael Fassbender and Guy Pierce, and the terrifyingly real monsters. Director Ridley Scott has announced that Alien: Covenant will become the first part of a new Alien trilogy that’s much closer to the original film.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword

This macho action film about knights comes from Guy Ritchie, and it’s filled with great actors, superb historical costumes, and impressive castles and magic — what more do you need in a movie? Aside from Jude Law and Charlie Hunnam, you can also admire the performance of Aidan Gillen ("Littlefinger" in Game of Thrones), who stars here in a huge blockbuster for the first time.

Passengers

If you can get past some of the hackneyed elements of the script here (which are, it seems, almost inevitable in every Hollywood movie), then this is a great film. It has almost everything you could want: outer space, a huge impressive spaceship, and an intriguing plot in which a seemingly good character carries out dishonorable acts.

Already in movie theaters

Kong: Skull Island

Every new movie about King Kong often stands as a showcase of the cinema industry’s current abilities to create jaw-dropping special effects. This movie is no exception, and for that reason alone it’s worth watching only on the big screen. Apart from its beautiful visuals, you’ll also be treated here to great performances by Tom Hiddleston and Samuel L. Jackson. The movie depicts what happened before the huge beast left its native island.

Release date: March 10, 2017

Paterson

This movie from Jim Jarmusch was made for those who "love with their eyes" — that is, for those who have an interest in cinema from a visual perspective. As with his previous movie Only Lovers Left Alive, this one’s only worth seeing in the cinema. You’ll enjoy it even more if you can find a movie theater where there’s no one else to disturb you as you take in this ode to the beauty of everyday life.

Split

Kevin, who has a split personality (there are 24 different personalities in his head), kidnaps several girls. With Split, the director of The Sixth Sense and The Village, M. Night Shyamalan, rehabilitates himself after several big-budget flops — and as various movie critics have pointed out, he does it in style. Here, Shyamalan ratchets up the gloom and mystery to the point where you simply have to see this movie in a theater.

The Lost City of Z

The release of this drama about Colonel Fawcett, a well-known explorer of South America at the turn of the 20th century, promises to become a major event in cinema. Fawcett intends to uncover a lost city in central Brazil. Before leaving, he requested that a search party not be organized for his group if it did not return by the designated date. Fawcett never returned, and numerous attempts to learn of the fate of his expedition came to nothing.

Life

This science fiction thriller comes from the director of the movie Safe House and the team that wrote the script for Deadpool. A group of explorers finds evidence of life on Mars. They decide to collect specimens and take them back to Earth. As it turns out, this is a very bad idea.

Release date: March 24, 2017
Blade Runner 2049

The sequel to the cult hit from Ridley Scott, this movie is directed by Canadian Denis Villeneuve, who has already established his credentials for making serious and atmospheric movies with the film Arrival. The outstanding cinematography of Roger Deakins helps turn the world of blade runners and replicants into a truly mesmerizing spectacle. As if this wasn’t enough, the movie stars Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, and Jared Leto.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

How could you possibly not watch the new Pirates installment on the big screen? This isn’t even up for discussion. It is, quite simply, one of those movies made for the movie theater experience. Once again, we’re eagerly looking forward to seeing our beloved band of pirates led by Johnny Depp, and this time he’s joined by Javier Bardem and Kaya Scodelario.

Release date: May 26, 2017
The Dark Tower

The shooting of this long-awaited movie was accompanied by a degree of outrage over the inappropriate choice (as some people think) for the role of its central character. Nevertheless, this film is one you definitely can’t afford to miss at the theater — who knows? It might turn out to be the start of a new movie craze. Plus, it’s got Matthew McConaughey in it!

Release date: July 28, 2017
Thor: Ragnarök

It’s been claimed that the third installment of the Thor series will stand head and shoulders above the rest with its outstanding visuals and (finally) some humor. We’re expecting something truly amazing when it comes to the special effects, for Thor is set to encounter the fiery demon Sultur, whose goal is to realize the prophecy of Ragnarök.

It

It is one of Steven King’s most terrifying and entertaining books, telling the story of how an evil force, taking physical form as the clown Pennywise, terrorizes seven children in a town in the state of Maine. The last time we saw Pennywise on our screens was in the successful TV show version of 1990 — now, it’s finally getting the big screen treatment!

Release date: September 8, 2017
Star Wars: Episode VIII

The chances are that this will be one of the most financially successful movies of the upcoming year. And there’s now less than a year to go until its release date. The above image was in fact taken from Episode VII, as nothing from Episode VIII has been released yet, but we’re nevertheless certain that it will be as captivating as its predecessors. Which is why we’re definitely going to see it at the cinema!
