Coonette is right. Obesity is going to be rampant wherever there is cheap, fatty food. And the USA is actually number 3 on the WHO's list of 10 fattest countries in the world. While that is still a terrible number, following incredibly close behind the US is Germany, Egypt, UK, and Israel among others.
The poorest in America are the fattest because of the additives in cheap food. You would think you are just eating a piece of bread but you are getting so much filler that is non-nutritious and that your body can't process that you're still hungry because your body is saying it isn't getting nutrients.
Fresh produce is more expensive than prepared foods. And foods that are healthy are far more expensive than less-healthy foods. But they package the shit foods with pretty pictures of farms and greenery to make you think it is good for you.
And the preservatives too are horrifying.
I blame many parents for not reading the ingredients of the foods they buy for kids. So much marketing is done to make kids food popular, parents automatically think it is healthy.
I had a weight problem, but I've lost 50 lbs. Just by reading the ingredients.
I feel sorry for these kids. They really aren't the ones making the choices here. They may say they want something but they have no money to buy their own groceries. Someone else is giving them crap to eat. Too many parents just can't say NO.
The parents of these kids are more to blame than the kids themselves. Don't these parents monitor thier kids eating habits? Or make them go outside and play once in a while? I think most of the USA's obesity problem is with the parents not the kids.
