This does not add up. A few planes get hit by lightning each year. For the past 30 years aircraft design has been getting better at routing lightning through the skin of the plane without causing any damage.

I used to work in the aerospace industry and lightning strikes though disliked were not greatly feared. There is definitely something else wrong with this plane. A full investigation has to be done.

From the photos it looks like the plane suffered multiple stress fractures that were building up over the years. Boeing 737's could be very old, the design has been around for over 40 years.
