as for #3, i prefer my own milkcrate bed. the crates (2 layers, not one) are all right-side up, so i can use them for storage. i have the sides stencilled with general descriptions of what's inside each one, and two fitted wooden sheets on top which serve as the base for the mattress. the wood sheets easily slide or lift up to access the crates below, but are secured from moving around when the mattress is on top. i also built a crate-and-wood arm by the bed which swivels an LCD monitor anywhere i like so i can recline and use the computer. keyboard and mouse, wireless of course.
