Apparently, they are added to tap water to eat mosquito larvae to keep water sources clear.
that's friggin' awesome. i'd been wondering how municipalities deal with this issue; had just been too lazy to check, so far.

Why ? Cause tap water has to pass a number of quality tests, required by law even while bottled water has none of that... get my drift ?
