umm...trees are a renewable resource. Get it? We can plant more trees, hundreds and hundreds of thousands of new tress. We can wait 100 years before cutting them down and then planting hundreds of thousands more. Are you people stupid??

As was just mentioned above... trees grow... then then they get too big and too rotten to stay up and then they fall over... decompose back into the soil. Sometimes they burn in a forest fire caused by lightning. All part of the 'natural' cycle. I guess the tree-huggers forgot what happened to Yellowstone Nat. Park a number of years ago? The Forest Service wanted to go in and clean up the debris and dead branches to protect the forest from a big fire. Tree-huggers fought the Forest Service in court to prevent that from happening. A very short time later, the forest burned to the ground in spectacular fashion. Good job, Eco-morons! You can't have it both ways.

Its really easy to set in your house made of wood, wipe your hiney with paper made from wood, copy junk on your computer with paper made from wood, sit at your computer table made of wood and talk about how dumb we are to cut trees. You are the same people that think meat comes from a store. Trees are a renewable resource.

Many of these large trees are douglas fir which thrived after fire. They were probably 300 to 600 yrs old. After the last ice age we see where different species of trees grew all over the Pacific NW. Trees are a renewable resource. But I am glad for the pockets of old growth still left. However, when the become dead, dying and no longer growing is time to harvest. We do not allow fires anymore because of air pollution. Fir trees grow in the sun and open areas on the west side of the Cascades and in the shade of other trees on the east side. The ecosystem is complex and never was there a continual stand of old growth from the mtns to the puget sound, but a mosiac of age classes from young trees to old growth. The sad thing now is that the big timber companies are cutting 40 to 80 yr trees on rotation. On a lot of the USFS ground when an old growth fir falls to the ground a hemlock, cedar, or white fir will take it's place as those trees are shade tolerant. This is how the forest changes from a doug fir dominent forest to a hemlock/white fir forest. Hemlock and whitefir species start to die after 125 yrs. Only cedar will grow to the 400_+ old growth status. It is a complex issue. And yes many of our every day items we use do originate from a tree.

Its called greed and exploitation. We clearcut those stands of huge timber, starting in Maine soon after settlement period. When they were all cleared there, we moved west, for more easy pickings in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. When we gutted the forests there, we moved further west, to the mountain states and the west coast states, following the same model as before. Most of us have learned a lesson since then. Its all in the history books. Try reading them sometime.

These fellows were hard workers and they needed the lumber to build boats, houses..they were mostly homesteaders that started the towns..what else were they to make houses out of, straw and mud. Be thankful that our forefathers were hard workers. Can you imagine sawing on a tree that size by hand and no chain saws. They were brave...the young guys today would probably not be able to work that hard. Were we just supposed to let the trees grow and live in caves. Get with the program some of you and get realistic...
