1) This is Whitestone pond in Britain and is only a few inches deep. Worst thing somebody gets is a wet foot. 2) The weather in the UK has been well below freezing for several days. A shallow pond would have adequately frozen in this time, if not frozen solid. A few hours above freezing would not immediately melt it. 3) The ice is a wonderful blue color with no cracks or slush visible. The skaters are leaving virtually no marks in the ice. This is good ice. 4) A family is out spending quality time with their kids instead of turning them over to be entertained by TV.
