What is also interesting is that the area is near the non-magnetic south pole. The geomagnetic field line are vertical rather than lying across the planet from pole to pole. This area creates a void where compasses don’t work.
No one seems to have a real theory about how this block landed on and continues to float around on this iceberg yet. It is definitely baffling.

Might be because (since it was found where compasses don't work) a wooden ship crashed there because it lost its course, and that piece of wood is the only bit that didn't go under the water.

"Au contraire" compasses work just fine, they just tend to point at the pole which happens to be right under your feet.

The ignorange in some of these posts is baffling. The "non-magnetic south pole" means geographic south pole. It is in the middle of a CONTINENT, thousands of miles to nearest sea, ant this seems to be in ice-free water too so even further away.
Compasses work just fine there as earths magnetic field is not limited to the actual planet.
The block is resting on level surface without any sinking into the ice below, so it has not been there for very long. It has never been "inside" the ice as the melt would have been uneven...
That piece of wood has most likely been put there by the photographer or someone is playing a trick on him/her. Sheesh.

Actually it could be only a top of bigger piece of wood and is sticking from the iceberg like, ahem, the iceberg from ocean :)

I left it there to mark my spawn point before moving on to a different biome where I could settle down and feel comfy. I utilized INVedit to get the needed resource.
