Okay, what's "Hip it" or "Leave it" mean? I was unmoved by the picture. There seems to be only the size relationship scale to extrapolate the distance with. And I agree with @0 that it must be further than that. (Boy, I like this site.)

No, i think the distance scale is right. If you take the saze of the two bodies into your calculation you would come to the conclusion that the distance on the picture is somewhat 373 thousand kilometers, which is totally in the moons distance range.

...and also Wikipedia has a similar picture...

one doesn't need to do anything more than measure the earth-distances between the two to tell that izismile's statement is rubbish. the earth and moon are NOT ~40 earth-distances apart, period. not even close.

Earth-Moon distance is around 400000 kms.
Earth's diameter is 12756 kms.

400000 / 12756 ~ 31.4

In my system the diameter of the earth on this picture is ~20. The distance to the moon is ~580. This means the distance is ~29 earth diameters, which would be ~370000. The real distance is between 363.300 and 405.500 km.

^ thanks- i stand greatly corrected. ^

did a little checking, and by comparison, the planet that comes closest to earth is venus at a near-distance of 38m kms. therefore it would be almost 3000 earth-diameters distant from earth, or a hundred times greater than the distance to the moon.

i guess i was getting the moon and the planets mixed up, in a sense.
