I agree, this kid's body is destroyed but in the game world he's able to be everything he can't in the real world. Its a sort of power and freedom for him. Good for the little guy.
@random avatar If given the option to play as a man or a woman in a third person game, I'll typically choose woman. Not because I have some sort of gender identity issue, but simply because I'd rather look at a chick running around than a well-muscled guy while I'm playing. Look at it this way, would you rather set pictures of random dudes that look kind of like you, or you could identify with as your wallpapers, or nice looking ladies? That's how I see it at least.
