from the scientific evaluations i've seen, cannabis has one of the lowest addiction ratings among all mind-altering substances, including alcohol, tobacco & caffeine.
re: cancer,
first of all, smoking just about anything produces carcinogens which can lead to cancer. second, there is very little correlation between weed and cancer in terms of known cases. last, cannabis can be taken in completely safe ways other than smoking.
