"bright lights of San Francisco"??? It's raining almost on every painting... The dude has skills, no question there, but do I want to go there after seeing this? not really...
No one is questioning his art, his style, his method. What's being criticized is being in love with a mediocre-looking city, thus his talent going to waste if he intends to go for brightly lit cities and/or worthwhile structures and rural architecture, yet focusing on that crummy place.
If he loves painting headlights' reflections on the wet pavement, he can do that with just about any other city in the world.
