You should not accept to work for 2.65$/hour... It's the employers responsibility to pay you a salary you can live with. Tips are on only on top of that for extra good customer service.
"I don't tip because society says I have to. All right, if someone deserves a tip, if they really put forth an effort, I'll give them something a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, it's for the birds. As far as I'm concerned, they're just doing their job." Mr.Pink, Reservoir Dogs
Comments by people like gigantes are people that are beggars at heart and feel they should get extra compensation just for doing the bare minimum of work.
I tip at 20% when I have good service, and more than that when I've been drinking and have good service. However, if you suck as a waiter/waitress, then you get nothing. I've only never tipped twice, and I tend to dine out a lot. That said, that fake ten is bullshit. I'd love to put a handful of those on a church collection plate.
#6- : I wouldn't rush to say they were christians - I mean before having a job (while in school with virtually no money) - had I had those fliers I would have done the same (it's a good joke - esp when you don't want to tip) - also I've got a bunch of atheist friends (used to have - in the "good days" -) that would use them as a joke instead of giving a tip.
I seriously doubt waiters do 'a bare minimum of work'. I bet they are a lot more tired running around all day, for an insanely long time often, than you sitting at your desk from 9.00 to 17.00. In the US you tip, in Europe we don't really as the waiters get paid a normal wage, so we only tip when the waiter was really great. In the US the waiters are paid feck all, so they count on you to tip. Don't be rude to the waiters, it's not their fault the system is so crappy for waiters. And sure, some waiters suck so you are entitled to tip less if you feel the service was horrible, but there are a lot of assholes, like commenter nr three there who don't tip just because they don't feel like it and don't want to spend more money. It often has little to do with the service, people are just stingy and don't want to pay 15%.
