People have been smoking cigarettes while pumping gas for years. There is technology on the pump to make sure you will not cause any real damage, unless you shove the cigarette in your gas tank or have a "gasoline fight accident"

Smoking the cigarette isn't the problem, it's lighting it that's stupid. You can throw a lit cigarette into a bucket of gasoline and nothing will happen. Still not denying this girl's level of stupidity, however.

Emanon, the problem is not the gasoline, but the mixture of gasoline with air. A cigarette is enough to ignite that.

Blackleaf, it can. The temperature of ignition for the gas is around 450º, the temperature in the middle of a lit cigarette being smoked can reach upwards to almost 600º.

The gasoline doesn't burn with a cigarette, in fact, you can turn off the cigarete in gasoline. The problem is with the gas thank in the car and the gas that release the gasoline.
