i have a hard time believing this is cheaper or more practical than other methods. and aren't there more pressing needs for the carriers across the world? you know... under actual duty?

Its not as tho it cost them any gas or anything been nuke powered, its probably cheap as to run

nuke-powered vessels cost a hell of a lot to build and maintain. gas is the least of concerns.
