You must be american. Because you can't do that in UK. Check out the laws about firearm possession. Also i doubt that someone could shot a burglar on someone elses property even in US.
5 years sounds way too high. America is a prime example showing that high sentences won't help reducing crimes. Hell, even one year that would be taken away from me would feel awful. And if I was that robber guy, I WOULD pay a visit to that guy.
