Regular pet owners usually keep theirs in the back of the car, preferably in a cage of some kind. And while it's possible he still thinks it's random I'm pretty sure he knows the driver is in control seeing as most people tell the dog beforehand. ("Wanna go to the park?" and so on)
This is cute, but your dog seems to have anxiety issues in the car. He would probably feel more secure in the back. They are not people and do not have the same thought process as we do.
