These guys didn’t know that you shouldn’t put a lid on it.

i think you've misunderstood. their mistake was not one of adding a lid, but of failing to open the can prior to heating.

@gigantes, have you made manjar sometime.
they failed put a lid over the saucepan especially if someone use pressure cooker to make it.

@gigantes Nope, I haven't. When you're cooking dulce de leche - no lid on the saucepan, otherwise BOOM. Did it as a kid. Big mistake ever.

@gigantes You don't say! :P Sure thing the can exploded and in this case, because they put a lid on the saucepan. Even though, it might be better to poke holes in a can, you can still cook it without holes, just don't cover the pot with a lid. They didn't do any of those things. That was the point.

Having a lid is fine. They let the pot boil dry - THAT is the problem. As long as there is sufficient water in the pot the temperature does not go above 100 deg C and the can copes perfectly with that.

I helped cleaned up a girlfriend's parent's kitchen once, in a rush before her parents came home because she had let a pot boil dry (and, for the record, it did not have a lid on).
