Not to compare my upbringing to that of kids in a third world nation, but we used to make toys with trash all the time. Styrofoam airplanes, a guitar made out of a stick shoved into a laundry soap bottle, the discarded mattress as the landing pad for a pole vault pole that was once the cardboard tube that a carpet was wrapped around... It's all about imagination. This brought back really good memories actually. First world kids just need to get outside and play more, and, dare I say it, use their imagination.
Well, I made toys too. They were not precious. For me, that was pretty much the point with them. Since I alone decided how they were supposed to look and what they were supposed to be, they could be definition never really break. They could only become something else, as opposed to store bought stuff that basically only could become broken, and often in a way that would upset parents.
Humanity is about enjoying the fruits of your imaginations and labor. Compare that to city kids that are spoiled with useless toys and get bored with them in a second.
