It's an old kitchen timer, so the women folk knew when to stop making sandwiches and attend to other needs.

Naw man, can't be. Women are great at multitasking, they don't need to stop making sandwiches. Its obviously an alarm clock to wake men to make sure the women don't stop making sandwiches.
