In an odd, new fashion phase, kids in Thailand, Indonesia and China are sporting “fake braces” as a status symbol. Interestingly, in these countries, orthodontic braces are expensive (a set of tinsel-teeth will cost you roughly $1200) and therefore a sign of wealth, making them the hottest new, fashion addition. The market is now flooded with numerous knockoffs and fakes. In Indonesia, fashion braces—which are called kawat gigi untuk gaya or behel—will run you a mere $100.
