interesting stuff, but IMO it's all pretty much fiscal and mental masturbation in the end. there are probably so many unforseeable difficulties lurking in such an endeavor as to make it a very painful, awkward experience before long. if not downright fatal.
this kind of thing is a testament to scientists and visionaries-- even if the earth was falling to pieces, they'd still be brainstorming stuff like this to the bitter end and getting news orgs and lay people excited as always. doesn't mean that any of it is actually a good idea. it's just what they do.
