That's full-strength laudanum. It's not exactly "poison" in the sense of pest control.
It was raw opium dissolved in alcohol, designed to be taken by the drop or added to other mixtures. Each drop was between 3-9 mg morphine, depending on the specific mixture.
It was commonly available (and addiction was a big problem) to treat bowel issues, headaches (migraines), PMS, any just about any other condition. Ironically, it was also given to people who were trying to get over their addiction of smoking opium.
