I wonder what happened to those who didn't wore a hat? Where they shot? If anyone wear such hats today, people will give them a funny look. I wonder, when did this hat mania start and when did it end? I have hound this post on how it may have ended: http://www.primermagazine.com/2010/learn/the-man-who-killed-the-hat
very interesting links, fellas. i think one other reason why the hat didn't last is because they're insulators, and urban environments tend to be hotter than rural (and are only getting warmer). so on hot days in hot cars with rudimentary air-conditioning (or none at all), removing the hat may have been a no-brainer so to speak. the hat may also have been in danger of blowing off when the windows got rolled down.
Fascinating photos. I noticed the street sweepers in a few photos. I believe those guys also had to clean up horse manure. Lord, what a nasty job that must have been !! think of the SMELL in the Summer , PEW !!!
