In the 1920s, it belonged to Hans Braun who was found dead and wrapped in a rug. Soon after, his wife was found drowned at sea. Otto Grunback took over ownership of the island after Hans but died of a heart attack while staying there. The next owner, Maurice-Yves Sandoz committed suicide in a mental hospital in Switzerland and then Baron Karl Paul Langheim suffered financial ruin as a result of lavish spending. Gianni Agnelli also owned the island but suffered many deaths within his family and Paul Getty endured the kidnapping of his grandson. The last private owner of the island was actually jailed.
