What is the point of blocking the driver's view with sand bags on the hood? Or are they filled with Zombie repellent?

Zombies might be wielding machine guns in their version of the apocalypse, hence the sandbags. Make it crawling zombies with machine guns since the bags are below waist line.

A total waste of grandma's car all in all.
