Oh, don't remind me. I've worked in a metal recycling facility for years and I have processed several tons of this wire.

so what metal is in that antique?
it looks white, not coppery. surely not silver-alloy...?

Copper is only good for 30,000 feet or about five miles. After that the bandwidth sucks.
