My little brother and me were messing around, and I pushed him into the shelf. When he fell, he pulled out the bookshelf with him. We always assumed it was just built into the wall.

I think this is bullshit. That stairway was built by the residents (current or previous) and there's no way someone could get through their house and into that crawlspace without having keys to the front/rear doors even if they knew this hidden area even existed.
