pretty sure at least some of these are from the film "a hard day's night," meaning the questions and answers are scripted.
still, my understanding is that they were indeed high a lot, which was probably an excellent way to deal with all the endless scrutiny, stress and inane questions. regardless, very few musicians have ever been as witty IMO.
