this is in no way surprising to me.

humans and dogs are both tribal creatures, essentially, while the wildcats (main genetic source of the domestic cat) tend to be a solitary creatures who can only tolerate other cats under the right circumstances.

Car attachments with owners vary much. Some cats gets very attached and follows his owner almost everywhere. My father's cat followed him and stayed with him in every place around the house. Another cat got from wild/agressive state to very lovable bond when she was cured from inner disease.

many animals also go in to a childlike state when in long-term relationships with humans providers / caretakers. so that's another factor.
