very nice. but the problem is that when a disadvantaged person hasn't found a way to be positive about things, asking about their condition can cause them real pain... which can of course come back to you.
not sure anything needs to be told to a child, though. isn't the whole idea that they're relatively innocent beings? any disadvantaged person has to deal with that no matter what.
