We had a milkman when I was a kid, circa 40 years ago. We had a refrigerator, but it was still very convenient to get fresh milk delivered every day or two. I think milkmen were killed off not just by the widespread use of refrigeration technology, but also by the rising cost of labor.

Before the technology or infrastructure was available to transport logs by truck, log drivers would float and guide them down rivers from logging sites to processing areas.
