You are wrong. This is how Chinese migrant workers live, it doesn't matter the place. The apartment where I live in China is a 2 floors 170 m2 place in downtown. Many people living here in the same conditions. 5 doors away from mine there is a flat for migrant workers, same apartment, 20+ workers living there. They are use to that. They work their asses off for 10-15 years and they return to theirs hometowns as wealthy businessmen. But to keep the face (don't lose face) they will never tell their friends back in China how they live there. Everyone knows.
I wouldn't say they like it. But since the university they are use to share small spaces. They can bear it. Another different matter would be the productivity.
