My theory on this: Once upon a time, there was a failed fashion designer, who was made fun of, by the models this person wanted to wear their designs. Then, somehow, said designer became accepted, and, now, exacts revenge by making models wear these outlandish creations, on the runway. And everyone has a case of "the Emperor's new clothes", and is not willing to risk scorn, by speaking out, on the sheer idiocy of the entire thing.

Personally, I think it's a competition between all the designers to see who can get the fashion press to accept the biggest, drug induced turd of the year.

That could very well be. I certainly never see any of these "cutting edge" designs worn, or even imitated, in real life (on the street). Neither have I heard, or read any logical explanation of why these creations are worth the time it took to draw them.
