not film; microfiche. so all he has to do is take them to the viewing machine area in this or his public library.

It's a microfilm, microfiche aren't rolled up.
He is probably from Michigan University, here are some details about X512 archives:

ok, same concept but rolled up instead of flat. main point i was trying to make is that each cell is a tiny document, not part of a moving image.
