What's "surprising"? This is what a microchip is literally a miniaturised version of. How do you think it was before the invention of very large scale integration (VLSI) devices? Everything was discrete parts. It's worthwhile mentioning as well that what one sees as macroscopic transistor packages here, are just that, packages to make them easier to handle; the actual semiconducting material interfaces are tiny and are buried inside connected to the comparatively 'massive' package leads.
