yeah it's a brutal process from what i understand. the talent pool is enormous and they start them from the youngest of ages as you can see here. you get only a piecemeal education because your whole life is dedicated to the sport you're in.

and if you falter at any point along the line, there's an army of substitutes who'd love to grab your spot.
